In this fascinating study, the twelve contributors focus on state-formation in Napoleonic Europe. Based upon the 3rd Wiles Trust Colloquium, it brings together the research findings of specilists in the histories of Europe's constituent nations and states during a momentous period in their development. Thematically focused and integrated within a comparative framework, the individual contributions explore areas as diverse as Britain, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and Russia. What impact did Napoleon have on the development of these states? How did they respond to the challenge he represented? How, as a result of the unprecedented scale of warfare that characterised this age, did the relationship between governments and peoples, princes and subjects, and elites and the masses, change? To what extent did the Napoleonic era mark the birth of modern Europe? These, and other questions are explored in a volume that reflects both Europe's diversity and shared experience.
