The silk industry greatly developed in the 17th century, with designs being influenced by the Huguenot refugees who had settled in the Spitalfields area of the city of London. As luxury items, silk clothing was worn infrequently and well cared for, which has ensured its survival, allowing the museum to piece together this fascinating story, and to understand the stunning silk designs of Anna Maria Garthwaite and James Leman.
