English summary: Paradise of the "Beautiful Savages": For the European traveller at around 1900, the South Seas were connected with the desire for alien beauty and the fascination of the nativeness of the people. The paintings of Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein, e. G., attest to this view. In this volume, the romanticising view of the artist is contrasted with historical reality: precious works of art and cult objects, belonging to an almost extinguished artistic tradition and most of them hitherto unknown, who arrived in Europe via merchants, missionaries, or colonial civil servants. Furthermore, eminent ethnologists, art historians, and biologists describe the colonial period both from the viewpoint of the natives as well as the alien Europeans. German description: Das Paradies der -schonen Wilden-: Fuer den europaischen Reisenden um 1900 war die Suedsee verbunden mit der Sehnsucht nach fremder Schonheit und Faszination fuer die Urspruenglichkeit ihrer Bewohner. Davon zeugen u. a. die Gemalde von Emil Nolde und Max Pechstein. Dem verklarenden Blick der Kuenstler wird in diesem Band die historische Wirklichkeit gegenuebergestellt: kostbare, bislang meist unbekannte Kunst- und Kultobjekte einer nahezu erloschenen Kunsttradition, die ueber Handler, Missionare und Kolonialbeamte nach Europa kamen. Dazu beschreiben namhafte Vertreter von Volkerkunde, Kunstgeschichte und Biologie die Kolonialzeit ebenso aus der Perspektive der Einheimischen wie aus der der fremden Europaer.
