The book provides a fundamental introduction to project management seen from a technical point of view. It discusses how to organize a project, and how to plan and control it, as well as some aspects related to project leadership. The book covers applied methods and techniques based on state-of-the-art theory and industrial practice. Primarily, the book discusses large projects. However, most of the techniques may also be applied in small and medium-sized projects. The topics covered in the book include the following: Project-oriented work, goals and success criteria, project phases and decision gates, project selection based on economic and other criteria, organization of project work, work breakdown, project scheduling, network scheduling techniques, cost estimating, procurement and contracting, project risk management, project control of scope, schedule and costs. The book is suitable for readers seeking a first introduction to project management. In addition, it may serve as a reference work for all involved in project work. Asbjørn Rolstadås is Professor of Production and Quality Management at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Trondheim. He has more than 25 years of experience of research and education in project management, and has practical experience from public studies, consulting and industrial training. The author has also been appointed as project manager of several global research projects undertaken in collaboration between industry and academia.
